If anyone was going to release a super psychedelic music video on 4/20, Snoop Dogg would be a safe bet.
And that’s exactly what the rapper did with his music video “Last Dance with Mary Jane,” based on Tom Petty’s 1993 hit. The song was originally released on Snoop Dogg’s album “Missionary” last December through Dr. Dre’s Death Row Records, Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records. The video – which incorporates motion graphics, mixed media, 2D and 3D animation and AI techniques – was produced in collaboration with agency Psyop, led by Joe Maggiore, its Paris-based creative studio Temple Caché and its co-founders Marion Castéra and Kelzang Ravach, as well as director Dave Meyers, Dr. Dre and Death Row Records. Appearing in the video, besides Snoop, are guest artists Jelly Roll, B-Real, Method Man, Redman and Wiz Khalifa and posthumous representations of Bob Markey, Tupac Shakur and Petty with permission from their estates.
The music video explores Snoop Dogg’s lifelong relationship with cannabis as he grew up in Long Beach, Calif., eventually joining the Crips before going on to global fame as a rapper. It starts out with Snoop in his doctor’s office (Dr. Dre, to be exact) who explains to him the damage that smoking weed is doing to his lungs. That leads a devastated Snoop to consider this his “last dance with Mary Jane” and the psychedelic journey through Snoop’s memories ensues.
The video employs all sorts of creative techniques, including proprietary AI software developed by Temple Caché to ideate the characters and shape some of the landscapes, but none of the scenes were totally generated by AI.
Released on April 20, the video already has more than 2 million views on YouTube.
